HARVEST MOON

In Japan, the rabbit lives on the moon. For the harvest moon of late September, tables are set with rabbits, pampas grass and a little gold. Porcelain from Hasami and Mino, and hand-sewn chirimen ornaments from Kyoto.

NEW RICE

Every autumn Japan waits for shinmai, the first rice of the year's harvest: glossier, sweeter, cooked with a little less water and eaten plain for the first bowl. This is the table for it. A clay pot from Banko to cook it, a sawara-wood keeper to hold it, rice bowls from Hasami, and the small plates that go beside a bowl of rice.

CHRYSANTHEMUM FESTIVAL

September 9 is the Chrysanthemum Festival, the last of Japan's five seasonal festivals and the one for grown-ups: a day for long life, for the first chrysanthemums, and for setting out the finest small things a household owns. Cedar boxes and trays with chrysanthemums raised in shell-white gofun by a certified craftsman, vermilion lacquerware from Echizen, and Kutani porcelain painted with plum and chrysanthemum.
